Hi,
I was just at a science show put on by the local varsity. As with most they had that little volcano experiment. I'm sure most people know how it works, theymake a little pile of that red chemical, pour some flammable liquid or other onto it and set it alight.

My question is very simple, what is that orange/red chemical?

thanks

Here you will find the text about the demonstration: http://www.chem.leeds.ac.uk/delights/texts/Demonstration_13.htm

The volcano thing is just about the lamest fucking thing you can do at a science fair! I mean, come on! Can you get any more cliched than that?!

How about something fun AND historical? Like "How the Nazi Gas Chambers Worked".

You'd have mice dressed up in little striped rag uniforms like the inmates at Auswitch would wear.

You have them inside a scale model of the showers with a cat dressed in a Nazi outfit outside. The cat paws a switch (which you're shining a laser pointer on the get its interest) which dumps chunks of sodium cyanide into acid.

Now THAT would be interesting to see.

Animal Auschwitz, just like in the comic book "Maus".

Or would that be "MOUSEchwitz"? http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/images/smilies/tongue.gif

It'll probably be the last day you'll ever be enrolled in school too. http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif

So save it for that special occasion. Maybe you could become a poster child for freedom of speech. Wonder if the ACLU would support you? HEHEE!

Can you tell I've got too much time on my hands? http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

I think someone took a walk off the edge of the map... if it were me I would make a huge 12 foot high volcano with thermite in a well so it spray's burning thermite all over the place, setting everything on fire that it touches, just like real magma http://theforum.virtualave.net/ubb/smilies/smile.gif that would get you expelled.

Hmmm, my loser volcano in 5th grade used baking soda and vinegar with red die in it.

I always wanted to do a report on how easy it is to produce SMG's in the home, but apparently cops dont like stenguns on schoolgrounds.

Just checked a chem supplier for ammonium dichromate, they say it's explosive, very toxic and dangerous for the environment!

here is the impressive Risk Description list:
R1 Explosive when dry.
R21 Harmful in contact with skin.
R25 Toxic if swallowed.
R26 Very toxic by inhalation.
R37/38 Irritating to respiratory system and skin.
R41 Risks of serious damage to eyes.
R43 May cause sensitization by skin contact.
R46 May cause heritable genetic damages.
R49 May cause cancer by inhalation.
R50/53 Very toxic to aquatic organisms, may cause long-term adverse effects in the aquatic environment.
R8 Contact with combustible material may cause fire.

Isn't this a little bit too exaggerated? (how the f*ck do you spell that?)

My catalogue says the same thing. It probably isn't a particularly sensitive explosive, since it has the same level of warning as Picric Acid.

now, if it's explosive, you could make a nice mount St. Helens vulcano by putting a little bit of sensitive primary in it....
That would be a cool demo http://theforum.virtualave.net/ubb/smilies/smile.gif)
