Question – The degradation of Phenylalanine using sodium hypochlorite will leave what? The aldehyde or a ketone? The reaction is based on that studied by Langheld . Who showed that when an alpha-amino acid is treated with sodium hypochlorite it is converted into an aldehyde containing one less carbon atom than the original amino acid?

The product is phenylacetaldehyde and the reaction is called Strecker Degradation (if you search for "strecker" you'll find more info).
