Alkene Hydrohalogenation
« on: September 01, 2003, 03:33:00 PM »
I wish to hydrohalogenate a symmetrical alkene consisting
of an unsaturated alkyl group which is connected to aryl groups.
My research of the literature indicates that HX will add at zero degrees.
However, this compound is a solid. My idea is to make HX from a halide salt and H2SO4, then bubble it through a solution of the alkene. The solvent could be polar or nonpolar, but will the arylalkyl chloride react with hydroxy groups, such as in the case of using an alcohol as the solvent?
Thanks for your time.
