Good Brand of Spectrophotometer?

I've seen many used inexpensive Spectrophotometers at online auctions lately. I'd like to get one in order to be able quantify concentration of alkaloids in organic samples.
What type (Visible, IR, UV) would do the best job, and what manufacturer (Perkin-Elmer, Gilford, Beckman, etc.)makes decent easy-to-use machines?

Perkin-Elmer UV has always been a good friend of mine. But before really buying one, you should check if spares are still available. This might be important and should be a decisive factor in purchasing the device.
Generally, UV(-VIS) are easy to work with. Even students can handle it

Generally, UV(-VIS) are easy to work with
But they would be of little use for the identification of unknown organics, for this you need IR.
