Yes a condenser is needed
Any thick balloon is fine if placed on the condenser

Use a condenser to avoid odor and prevent loss of HI.
Goggles won't do much for your lungs.

And in regards to the first/second reactions

The first is when the HI is created, where no pseudo is present.   The second reaction is when the pseudo is present and the actual meth is created.

And I was asking is a Osha gas mask needed when you might have contact with HI?

About odors and losing HI so therefore a condenser would bee a good idea.  Plus, i have never done a phosphorous acid synth and most who have use a condenser or at least some type of tubing etc..
