I guess I'm THICK then, or too anal, but have spent more than plenty of time searching and never found a CLEAR and DIRECT addressal of this process.

I would add some water to my FB crystals, and slowly add HCl untill the FB crystals have gone (which means they must have turned into pseudo-HCl.)

As for how much acid to add, I have heard all sorts about this, I dont know a definite answer.

Do a internet search on acid base extraction and freebase.  I think your on the right track.

To add hcl to the fb in a little bit of dh20 until all the fb crystals have dissolved.  Then evap on low heat and flash with acetone when nearly all the water has evapped.

To speed up your acetone/hcl evap use a hotplate on low setting until nearly dry and flash with acetone. Do another acetone wash if it still smells like hcl.
