Title: nitromethane
Post by: pickler on January 11, 2003, 05:26:00 PM
Swim just got some nitro that has a brownish color. It's racing fuel(so it says). Anyone ever try an amination with this type of nitro? Any idea what might be in the nitro to make it brown?

Swim has read of bees isomerizing safrole without distilling it from the sassy oil, but Pickler doesn't recommend it. There could be side reactions because of the other shit in the oil. You might not want to put a stopper into a flask that you are heating. Pressure will build up and you know the rest. Just go with the koh flakes and forget about the liquid potash.

Dont want to risk anything do you? Its alot of work but its worth it. Remember, NO SHORTCUTS.

Window and Hidden, your right, swim should distill it. Guess that's what swim will do.

Title: possibly castor oil or other lubricants
Post by: metwurst on January 12, 2003, 05:35:00 AM
The brown color could be castor oil or other lubricants added to help protect the little motors when running elevated MeNO2 fuel.
metwurst had some nitromethane that was slightly yellow, and had disappointing results until it was slowly and critically distilled.
Title: 100% Nitromethane should be clear and colorless

at least this is from my experience of recieving reagant Nitromethane as well as distilling Nitromethane from RC Car Fuel.

The place swim got it from said it was 100% pure nitro. After distilling 500ml of it, there was 25ml of non-nitro stuff left in the distilling flask. Seems like it was only 95% nitro. Plan on amination later on this evening.

I have never used anything under 99% pure MeNO2 and its crystal clear. The other 1% being nitroethane and nitropropane

Brown is a strange colour for fuel.  That indicates castor oil only, which is strange because high nitro car fuel usually has a synthetic oil which colours the fuel red (most common) or green.
