Title: MDA Freebase in Air
Post by: dr_ruthenium on September 10, 2003, 07:23:00 PM
When 2x distilled MDA freebase is exposed to air it forms a solid.  Does anyone know what it is?  Is it a salt?  Is it psychoactive?

MDA carbonate it should be.Or some polymerized goo.If it's a salt it should be active..

Yes, it is most definately the carbonate salt, and it is quite psychoactive!

Cool,SWIDR thought it might be carbonate (or even nitrate) salt.  Thanks.  Bioassy pending.

Title: MDMA also ?

I think I have seen the same happening with MDMA. After some time, the freebase becomes a kind of opaque white solid substance. Is is the carbonate ? If so, how to convert it back to the freebase ?

Most liquid freebase amines form carbonates to some extent if left unprotected from atmospheric carbon dioxide. You can regenerate the pure freebase either by acid/base extraction or vacuum distillation.

If converting your ( DISTILATED ) freebase ( MDA or MDMA ) to the HCl salt, do not add concentrated HCl directly to your freebase. I think Chromic has already warned against this. It works whithout problem though on UNDISTILATED freebase.

If carbonate is psychoactive and stable, then why convert back to freebase?

Title: MDMA salts

wolfx: What you just said makes no sense. What is true is that you cannot precipitate the HCl salt of MDMA simply by adding concentrated hydrochloric acid to it - the salt will just dissolve in the water. Use a dilute solution of the freebase in a suitable solvent, then add dry HCl as an alcoholic solution or even better dissolved in ether. You can also gas the freebase solution with anhydrous HCl gas.

dr_ruthenium: The carbonate is not stable, it may easily revert back into the freebase in case the CO2 evaporates (due to heat for example).
