Question on Zealot's Ketamine synth
« on: June 21, 2004, 02:18:00 PM »
Perhaps I've overlooked something obvious, but step 10 of zealot's method seems to be lacking a piece of information:

45g of the above bromoketone is dissolved in 50mls benzene, add therein 50mls (17g(=23mls) is required for neutralization of HBr, but a 2x excess is used).

50 mls of what?

Please link to the procedure you are discussing. Most of us don't keep the entire site in the head, and it is not our job to UTFSE to understand something which you want to have answered.

Well I suppose I am going to answer my own question then.  And the answer is (after retranslating the original russian post):
Triethylamine!

Oh and in the bromination, the washes are with dilute Na2CO3 solution, not NaHCO3 as posted.  Washing with NaHCO3 makes a fine bubbly mess though  ;)
