Acid Base extraction goes wrong
« on: August 16, 2003, 11:18:00 AM »
I am a little confused as too what happened today and was wondering if anybody had an idea or advice about my problem.

Did the Round Bottom's write up for the second time.

(RoundBottom: "Os/BS AlHg MeAm Amination writeup", Methods Discourse)
Extracted everything in Xylene.
Then I did 3 washes with 5% NaOH. Extracted with about 250-300 ml of HCl 10%

The Water layer changed to pink with the first extraction and clear with the second. The colors were the same on my first try.

So I wash my water layer with Non-polar. So I decide to boil down the water a bit before bringing the pH back up to 12-13. The solution became very dark with a green film running the sides of the erlen.
Let the solution cool then I added some strong NaOh solution slowly. After adding a couple of mls, some reddish crap thats really sticky preciptated. I dont have a clue what just happened. It's the first time it does that and I havent changed any chemicals, solvents, etc.

Does anybody have a clue?
