Title: aqueous NaBH4?
Post by: FriendlyFinger on May 19, 2003, 12:47:00 PM
When a synth calls for "an aqueous solution of NaBH4", does that mean NaBH4 + water, or NaBH4 + water + NaOH.

Thanks,
FF.

In most procedures I've seen using aqueous borohydride they simply dissolve NaBH4 in water. If nothing in the reaction mixture is overly sensitive towards hydroxide ions there should be no problems adding the small amounts of NaOH necessary to stablize the borohydride.
