Title: Nitromethane distillation
Post by: bobsaloser on June 17, 2004, 01:20:00 AM
Nitromethane distills as an azeotrope with methanol as a 8% nitromethane 92% methanol mixture. So if the initial concentration of a solution is 20% nitrometane, and 200 mL was the initial volume, one could expect that the first thing to come of would be the azeotrope for the first approximately 176 ml (160ml methanol, 16 ml nitromethane)followed by the remaining 24 mL nitromethane. Now, obviously there is a transition where the concentration varies as the methanol nears complete distillation, but can anybody tell me if the theory is sound? Because if someone need about 16 mL nitromethane and about 84 mL methanol, couldn't the just dump 200 mL 20% nitromethane methanol solution into a flask, and collect the first 100 ml satisfying both needs?

use a codenser or even better next time you go to your hobby shop to buy model fuel ask for pure nitro (you like to make up your own fuels or you are spikeing existing fuel)

Just buy it raw, from a major petrolieum distributer>>(Think bigger then model carz my friend)Dragsters have all the fun!
