Title: Teflon Coating...
Post by: mtnfrogger198 on March 26, 2003, 08:46:00 PM
Has anyone ever Teflon coated anything? Swim was building an overhead stirrer, but wants to teflon coat the contact surfaces to avoid reactions with acids/bases.

Swim tried "Plasti-Dip," and found that it is soluable in Nitromethane! Good thing swim didn't have any honey in there!!!  ;)

Swim made overhead out of titan and teflon pipe and used some teflon tape also.Stirrer used was 500 wt drill, variac connected in between so drill got only 30-50 volts or so,nominal for that drill is 220 volts so i calculated its power was about 15-30 watts with such voltage.Drill had a some kind of transmission like 2:1(motor 2 turns, stirring blade 1).Drill was attached to stand with ring and clamp and these two connection held it pretty tight.Raf did sucessful performic and hydrolysis with this kind of improvised equipment without problems.Drill is usually designed to work hard short amount of time, but with that low voltage,it was ok for continous work(18 hours straight) also. :)

see fester's book - the one about piercing body armor - forget the title.

Tell us what reaction are you planning to dream.Teflon may not be necessary.Raf used teflon tape and just wrapped it tightly around metal pipe.

did you wrap the teflon around the tube?

funny. does exactly what he criticises in the same sentence.

btw. ceramics is underestimated badly. do a search for geopolymeres and get happy - no kiln needed.

Raf used some teflon just in case,it was probably unnecessary as stirring shaft(thin pipe) was made out of pure titan which is more stable than stainless when it comes to acids and halogens(chlorine did nothing to that pipe and so did HCl acid) and blade was made out of solely teflon pipe(don't ask how,it's sci-fi,but it seems to work). Then he also(don't ask why, just in case maybe) wrapped teflon around titan pipe. Here's pic. There's also a 1,5 mm2 wire besides it to give you a slight imagination on it's size. That brown colour came from performic and hydrolysis.I don't mind the colour.
