Title: modifiing Et2SO4 synth to make Me2SO4
Post by: Antibody2 on July 24, 2002, 10:41:00 PM
antibody is curious what modifications to the proceedure at Rhodiums site would need to be made to accomodate MeOH.

1 - obviously we must allow for the lower MW of methanol, but the other reagents (H2SO4 and Na2SO4) should be kept the same, right? or should less Na2SO4 also be used because of the reduced volume of liquid reagents?

2 - does the rxn need to be distilled to dryness or just until the visible rxn has ceased?

3 - should the oil bath temperature be lowered because of Me2SO4 lower BP or left at 155-165?

4 - not that there is likely to be much MeOH left in the receiver using vacuum, but how soluble in MeOH is Me2SO4, will they separate?

5 - the proceedure calls for a filter pump, is antibody correct assuming that not much vac is reqd.

6 - asides from oil contamination is there any reason an oil pump could not be used?

7 - how stable is the intermediate MeHSO4, can it be stored at RT for a day or overnight?

thanks
