Title: codeine syrup extraction
Post by: suspiria on September 05, 2003, 11:52:00 PM
SWIM just acquired a bottle of guaifenesin/codeine phsophate syrup.  There's 180mL of syrup, with 2mg/mL codeine, bringing us to the grand total of 360mg of codeine in the syrup.  Brand name is Cheratussin AC Syrup.  How would SWIM go about extracting the codeine from this syrup?  Checked TFSE, and the question has been asked, but never answered, as far as I could find.
Title: What do you intend to do with 360 mg?

Take it pure?
Transform it? Then wouldnt .36 grams(which you wouldnt probably end-up isolating, products loss) by a little small to work with?
Title: Release the base from the phosphate.

Release the base from the phosphate (using NaOH or other base). Use chlorinated solvent such as chloroform to extract. Then use an acid to get it water soluble again and extract with water.
