I found this lot at an online auction. It says they are reaction flasks. What are they used for? Could something this size be used in a synth? Not saying that I would. Something this size scares me. Just curious. (https://www.thevespiary.org/rhodium/Rhodium/hive/hiveboard/picproxie_docs/000267590-file_9sju.jpg)

Oh yeah baby they can be used for syth. SWIM has a 22L and 45L reaction kettle that he dosnt use to much anymore but they work great. And those round things are heating mantles. Shit with the Stirer shaft there you have the whole deal right there. But they are really a pain in the ass. You use them for a synth that calls for reflux. Shit they are fucking strong. Memories of when Swim had his 45L bouncing 1in off the ground before when he let his performic get too hot. Left the building and started praying.
But truth they are not really worth it. Very noticible expensive hard to get rid of and shit you can usew really about anything fir a reflux apparatus. Look at Baals 55G drum thread.

that's what i figured the metal kettles were.I don't think I could ever mess with this.I bet you were scared as hell. Kinda seems like it would be flirting with disaster to me. ::)

That 10L looks amazingly like one seeing use at this very minute by swim.
-
I note that none of the flasks fit the heating mantles.
-
The mantles are for a least a 22L Swim believes. But together with a the cloth mantle that goes around the flasks Viola. Hey and that stirrer thrown in there is preety handy. But most do not need to fuck with shit this big or obvious. And yes to answer youre question SWIM was scared as fuck when his shit was bouncing. Swim left the building and started praying thinking about a new life south of the border. Especially scary when you have a full tank of hydrogen for high pressure hydrogenations sitting next to it with a couple tanks of O2 close by. Thinking hydrogen bomb time when that happened.
-
what exactly are those cloth mantles called?
You mean those sort of beanie type thing that look like they would be made of glasswool or something.
I have seen a few of them on Rhodium's site.
Also I think that they are hot air/steam/water baths not mantles, they would pump either hot water/steam/air into it and drain it out the bottom and the flask would be suspended with a few cm's between the bottom of the mantle and the flask.
-
it looks like the owner put the large flask in the smaller mantle and the small flask in the large flask's mantle so that he could take better pictures of the two.

It seems like the DEA agents busted up somebody's lab.
Life without chemistry would be a mistake.

Thanks to this thread, some lucky bidder is going to get some attention from big brother.

Anything over a 5L Swim would not purchase online from a non trusted source anyway so there should not be a problem with this anyway unless you have suffecient reason to purchase these anyway. When purchasing anything large scale build up a client to client relationship with the loacal glassblower: get to know the ins and outs of glassblowing; shit swims local has even let him go back there let him blow some of his pices that he ordered. Most glassblowers will be only to happy to show you there craft and let teach you if you are interested in it.
As to question of what those fiberglass covers are is that they act almost as heating mantles themselves. They have plugins for heat and they act as if submersing youre entire flask in the oil bath and give a layer of protection from the heating mantle metal and youre flask. You do not want glass metal contact and do not want any solution to spill on open metal circuits that are hot. Good way to go boom. They make a mantle slightlly safer but still mantles can be dangerous. Swim had one catch fire when he walked to the bathroom before and almost burnt the room down.

SWIM has heard that flasks, heating mantles and such over 4L are subject to DEA reporting as with listed chems.

No, the metal hemispheres in the photos are electric heating mantles. The last photo is a closeup of the name plate on one of the mantles, you can see where it lists wattage and also input voltage. The name plate also lists the manufacturers name; you can visit their WEB site for more info.

Does anyone know if that is true? that flasks over 4 liters are also reported to the government?
Got Meth?

Well, I think they'd make some very cool terrariums. I'd love to have one in my front hallway.
Son of a bitch would ya look at that!
-
Yeah, I always wanted a 45L round bottom fish tank.

Actually I think that DEA flags purchases over 2 liters but I don't remember where I got that from, maybe someone can confirm?
BTW I saw those pics and just about creamed my pants. In terms of liability they are inconvient yes, but god think of how much fun you could have.

some ass hole i know bought a 13L 3neck flask with no problem (in the U.S.). but i see theres a problem. the problem is that i just came faster looking at those pics faster than porn.
"yeah but when was the last time 80 thousand people showed up to watch a dam science experiment?"

And the flask in the photo in this thread says 10L. That is why the flask doesn't fit in the heating mantle. Neither of those sizes is standard. The standard sizes (1 liter and above) are 1, 2, 3, 5, 12 and 22L.
-
I've actually seen in a website somewhere that anything over 22L (i mean the heating mantle) is restricted.
-
22 liter mantles are on a mandatory surveillance list. Totally different from just "reporting". Go to Mexico to that shit. ;)
