It is possible in theory, but practically impossible to pull of at a small scale in practice. Too violent reaction conditions and too much byproducts.

Ehyl chloride is much too voilatile to be practically useful, its boiling point is well under room temperature.

Ethyl iodide can be made from ethanol, Al foil and iodine. Rhodium's page should have the details somewhere. The ethyl iodide can be converted to diethylamine with NH3.

could dimethylamine be made in the same way?
just convert ethanol with methanol?

Thanx

I think dimethylamine can be made from DMF but I'm not sure, could also be totally wrong, check the tryptamine section at Rhodiums page.

>just convert ethanol with methanol
Ah, now I got it! this should read: use methanol instead of ethanol.
Please note that I don't want to flame you, this is just to help others
understand what you wanted to express. Where are you from, germany ??

peace.

>CH3CH2Cl +NaOH = varius ethylamines
NaOH ? That should read NH3, right ?? these 'various ethylamines' are ethylamine, diethylamine and triethylamine. Ok, I know everyone knew this but I had to write something to look smart :)

Hm, isn't there any method of producing secondary amines directly? I mean the
EtBr + NH3 method is SOOO unspecific.

Osmium could you give more details on that ethyliodide reaction I cant find it on Rhodium site? After you form the Iodide do you use ammonium hydroxide or bubble ammonia Gas through the solution or use liqiud ammonia? Give me Details or give me VD.

How do you go from the ethyl iodide to the Di Amine? could you use Ammoniun Hydroxide under reflux?

I didn't read your profile, just guessed.
Do I have any ideas ?

3 MeOH   PI3 --> H3PO3   3 MeI
2 MeI   NH3 --> (CH3)2NH   2 HI but it's not a very specific rxn, methylamine and trimethylamine, maybe tetramethylammonium-iodid will also be in your rxn flask.
But KrZ' 2 AcH   NH4Cl looks better, even though I have never read anything about it.
I'd really like to help you but as you may have noted I'm leaving the hive so it looks like you have to start slowly like I did, good luck and nice dreams, ciao

Won't AcH and NH3 form AcH-imine which is pretty unstable and will polimerize rather quickly ?
