color of safrole ???
« on: September 02, 2003, 12:35:00 AM »
Ok SWIM finally got his sassy to start coming over at 142C
He knows his stuff needs to be water like in color, but
his distilate has the slightest tinit of purple/lavender
to it. Is this ok ? He plans on taking his oil that has been  distilled and re-distilling it again. Does SWIM have anything he should worry about this color stuff? -peace

Double distill

double distill is a good idea, with the color thing i am unsure, in past experience it should be clear and refracts light.

IMHO you dont need to D-distill but the purer the better, Once you get familular with ur setup you can predict all that is going to happen and therefore collect the best fraction.

Did you discard your fore run, if not how much did you leave in, that may your problem.

also what oil did you use, as safrole comes from a variety of sources?

-proper apparatus and installation and working, e.g. short vigreux-column (200-300mm)
-fraction-management, like technology told....
-fraction-management, with that apparatus, Laptop told about (between dist-column and receiving flask...)
8)  8)  8)
= no problems with strange colours, also not in da ketone area....

See if you lose that color by discarding the first 10% and (if necessary), the last 10%.  The first 10% is kind of a drag, because you have to break vacuum and replace your receiving flask (be careful, your reaction flask is still heating while your vacuum is off, and you could get "the big splash" - apply the vacuum slowly to avoid this), but the last 10% is simply left in the reaction flask.

secure your time and just smoke a joint... ;)
You don´t have to stop your vacuum, if you are using that Labtop apparatus....That´s much more easy and you have "to work less".... :)
If you don´t want to buy a whole piece, just look for MaDMAx "Simple Glass to Fancy Glass".

Yeah SWIM discarded his next two runs the first and
last 10% after he did no more color could be seen
Didn't care about breaking vac, cause I got it down
so nothing bad happens. Good stuff this Chem
junk is. So I got 700mL of what Im pretty sure is
pure safrole it smells ever so lightly of Sassafras
is that ok? It's pretty clear just a very slight tint
of yellow to it. So SWIM put it all in the freezer
and he's goona see if it freezes to make even purer
stuff if that can even happen. But SWIM is all set to
do the Wacker
