Safrole in Ketone
« on: August 07, 2003, 03:44:00 AM »
Is it ok to have a small amout of safrole in your ketone. My friend belives he has 32 grams of Ketone and a small percentage may be safrole. Should he re-distill or is it ok to continue to the amalgam. He has been using Brightstars write up.

Your friend should have thrown out the forerun which would be the lower boiling point safrole and maybe DCM or whatever solvent you extracted the ketone with from your previous reaction.

The ketone usually comes over about 25 °C above the safrole depending on your vacuum.

A small amount will not do any harm, but, what do you define a small amount as? a couple of ml of a few.

it all depend on whether you are a stickler for purity?

As someone else mentioned distill to purify. you could perhaps re-distil to obtain a better fraction of purity. Once again it depends on what you are trying to acheive..."

obviously PURER the BETTER

all the best
