I think that DCM is more efficient for defatting process, as it is a somewhat more agressive than xylene for instance. As solvent for the A/B extraction toluene or ethylacetate is probably two good alternatives. DCM will give you a less pure extraction, as it pull's almost everything non-polar over in the organic phase, but it works
. Methanol is not useable here, as it is miscible with both water and almost whatever you throw at it(except the pure carbon solvents like heptane, hexane etc).
