Aluminum alkoxides for Claisen Condensations?
« on: June 15, 2004, 10:59:00 PM »
I used the search engine to find out if aluminum alkoxides could be used in place of sodium alkoxides in the Claisen Condensation and other enolate reactions, and found out that aluminum isopropoxide couldn't be used because it would undergo a Meerwein-Pondorf-Verley reduction with the resulting ketone. However, wouldn't a primary aluminum alkoxide, such as aluminum ethoxide or methoxide work for Claisen condensations? To my knowledge, primary alkoxides do not cause Meerwein reductions.

I don't know, but think learning how to prepare NaOEt etc would be easier than finding out.

... don't know about using Mg(OMe)2 in a claisen condensation, though.
