Stupidity award for wrong hydrolization !
« on: September 23, 2004, 12:08:00 PM »
Hi guys. I did a strange thing a couple of hours before. Had some isoglycol left, which i wanted to
hydrolize with HCl as usual. I have to do it in 2 portions, because i do not own such a big flask (luckily).
I did it several times and it worked allways very good. I was in a hurry,
but i wanted to start the hydrolization of the first portion before leaving the house (bad idea).
2.5  hours later reaction was finished, i was back at home and poured everything into my sepfunnel and
expected the raw mdp2p separating to the bottom of my sepfunnel, but nothing happened.
I looked at the color and knew, something was wrong. I looked around, watched at the bottles and,
no, i recognized that i changed the bottles, stupid pig, i know. I used FORMIC ACID instead of HCL !!!
I'm not a professional chemist, so i don't know what has happened to my first glycol portion. Is there
a way to recover it or should i pour it down the toilette...
Hints welcome,
DF
