I don't know if this has been discussed or not but I've found a excellent alternative to a vacuum filter. in the place of vacuum I use pressure to push the filtrate thru its just a little twist on the same principle. A bicycle pump works great you will have to use your imagination but try it

Same here. I've been using this pressure thing as well. You can filter low bp stuff like ether and it doesn't evaporate.
Alot easier to make then a vacuum filter and you don't need a high pressure water supplier. Kudos dwarfer. You should patent it

If anybody wrote up a step-for step for the construction of this kind of invention, it sure would land on my page and help people better than with just this idea.

It really doesn't take more then ten minutes to build one of these things.
Just get one of those beakers babies drink from.I chose this beaker because its polypropylene and the lid has screw threads so it stays on fairly tight.
Heat up a thick screw driver and ram it through the bottom of the beaker. Keep doing this until you got lots of holes in the bottom.
The holes have to be about .5cm diameter or water just gets stuck in the hole.
Make a hole in the top of the lid big enough for a bike valve. Stick the bike valve through the hole and glue it on.
Get a normal conical funnel like the one they sell at home brew stores.
Glue the beaker (multiholed end down)onto the funnel using a glue gun or something so it looks like this:

Thats it. The construction phase is complete.
Now stick the funnel above the flask you want the filtrate to pour into.
Pour the stuff you want to filter into the top of the beaker.
Jam the lid of the beaker on.
Connect uip the foot pump to the valve on the lid.
Pump away.

The great thing about this is you can be as sloppy as you want since none of the connections need to be that air tight.
A simpler way to explain it would be, make an air wacker device from a polypropylene container and drill lots of holes in the bottom of it.
Stick this onto the funnel of a normal filtering setup.
