Abstract
An improved two-layer method of the Nef reaction which is effective for the conversion of a variety of aromatic nitroalkanes into carbonyl compounds is described.
The yields of phenylacetaldehydes from phenyl-2-nitroethanes cluster around 65% while phenylacetone is isolated in almost 90% yield, as are several related benzyl ketones..
