Troubles with Alumina (BDO->GBL)
« on: September 18, 2003, 02:05:00 AM »
I'm was wondering about solvent free oxidations of diols. I understand that a 50% potassium permanginate and 50% 20/80 mixture of alumina and copper chromite are required; however, when I was looking up alumina there were so many different kinds, activated,acidic,gamma...etc. I was wondering if help me figure out which alumina would work best for this synthesis. I was also hoping for some clarification on the stoichimetric ratio of oxidant:reductant. Tetrahedron letters suggest 4g oxidant for ever 2mmol of reductant (~0.18g) does this make sense, or am I making some sort of childish math error? I appreciate any and all help.
Thanks,
