Does anyone have any experience with the electrolytical reductive amination of a ringsubstituted-beta-nitrostyrene, in a solution of HAc+EtOH+HCl for the catholyte, and HCl (14%) for the anolyte?
Cathode is a lead sheet and anode is a carbon rod.
Current 0.7 A/cm2
Reduction time aprox. 12 hours.

Sounds nice in theory. But what about the actual difficulties?

One of the biggest problem is to find a suitable cell divider, an ion permeable membrane to place between the anode and cathode departments.
I don't believe a clay flower pot will do, as some sources (uncle fester) claims.

Foamed plastic foil, or a sponge might work. Or dialysis membranes.

Spend the money and buy a sintered glass frit extraction thinble or a Al2O3 porous cup. It will last for many reductions. Look at my web-page for a complete write-up.

Anything else that might be harder than the theory?
Has anyone done a reduction like this with a pre-goodie nitroethene or propene, and got a good yield of the goodie?

The clay pot will work for non critical separations such as merely making NaOH from brine, for example: and the sheep intestine's role (as secondary separator, making a 3 cell system) in real life is such that it in fact does have pores that allow ion transport and not molecules.
In combination they work well enuff for the electroreduction entitled "new fester method": although I have no doubt that glass frit material will be better if you wish to specify your desired pore size.

If you want to make one for about $3.00 and 1.5 hours invested time take a look at the D-VI machination at Villageidiot's (FJ's) website.
