Title: Methylenedioxytoluene
Post by: Bwiti on May 20, 2002, 10:32:00 AM
What's the b.p. of methylenedioxytoluene? If it's in solution with piperonal, can it be distilled-off under normal pressure without either being destroyed? Thanks and peace! 8)

How the fuck are you getting these toluenes!? Tell me! Tell me now! Arg!  ::)

To coax you into telling me, here is your answer:

3,4-Methylenedioxytoluene, CASRN: 7145-99-5
Mass: 136.15g/Mole m.p.76°C b.p.81-83°C@11mm r.d.1.135

Fuck me! 25g = $24.90; 100g = $75.80; 500g = $259.00

!!! Expensive shit!

Now how did you get that!?  ::)

Reduction of piperonal is pretty easy if you want the toluene.

Piperonal is slightly out of reach (list 1) where I am. If I had it, it would serve the same purpose as the toluene anyway: conversion to MDP2P.

Title: Say after me: "Asian export companies"
Post by: Rhodium on May 20, 2002, 07:13:00 PM
Piperonal costs less than $25/kg plus shipping from most asian chem suppliers, and I haven't found a single one this far who is not willing to label goods as per request, for example "isopropylvanillin" or similar. They are in the business for the money, not to satisfy foreign customs agencies. As they also gladly label the package "commercial sample" you don't have to pay import tax either.

Title: 4-Methylcatechol - Is It A Common Chem?
Post by: Bwiti on May 21, 2002, 02:00:00 AM
Yeah, Rhodium's right, asian suppliers will sell you trimethoxybenzaldehydes, ketamine, ect.. Unlike american suppliers, they don't have to wimp-out to the feds. As far as the methylenedioxytoluene goes, make it like you would 1,3-benzodioxole, only use 4-methylcatechol(3,4-dihydroxytoluene). <- Rhodium, was it you that told me this? Anyway, I don't know if this is a common chemical that's easily found or if you'll run into a brick fucking wall trying to find the stuff. I don't even know its CAS number, but I think I might have a synth somewhere around here. Peace! 8)

Yes, I believe I have mentioned that 4-methylcatechol thing in the past. Many of the patents which describe methylenations to form benzodioxole and piperonal include this as an example.

Primo search the net for chemical companies that specialize in phenols you will find a good source for what your looking for. chemindustry.com is a good directory.
