DMF: extracting from bromophenyl blue solution
« on: January 23, 2004, 04:50:00 PM »
Q: SWIM would like to get a hold of some DMF, formamide, or related solvent. For obvious reasons, that person does not want to just go to a chem. supply house and order it. There IS however, some bromophenyl blue solution (<1% in DMF) that this person has access to. Is it feasable to separate the DMF from the solution? If anyone knows of a way to do this, or has any comments about whether it would be worthwhile, it would be appreciated.

It's called distillation, and in the case of DMF it usually occurs at 156°C unless you use a vacuum pump.

That is what I figured... I just thought I'd send this one out for another opinion. Thanks.
