Benzene, Benzol - another way
« on: December 14, 2003, 11:44:00 PM »
Once there was a thread on making benzene - I couldnt find it anymore, lost in the wind like so many things?
Probably I am just to stupid in using the beloved search engine.....

Chloramine-B is told to decompose at about 185C VIOLENTLY. The violent decomposition can be controlled by mixing the chloramine-B with sand one to one by weight. A condensor of sufficient cooling power is needed to condense the liberated benzene which has an boiling point of about 80C. The collecting flask should be cooled by an icebath, purging the system with an inert gas is not necessary as long the heating the reaction is done carefully and hotspots are avoided - a sandbath can be used - slow heating and temperature control of the sandbath is a must-be, the same is to be told for thick gloves, eyeprotection and a protection against shrapnels around the reaction vessel (steelwiregauze/net for example).

Before trying this, read the MSDS on benzene.
Avoid inhalation!
