Title: Copper Condenser for Al/Hg Reductive Amination
Post by: DrugsRCool on February 20, 2004, 07:31:00 PM
Damn.  Broke condenser number 2.  Only left with one 200mm 19/22 Leibig Condenser but I want to do an Al/Hg reductive amintaion and want two.

So, I searched @ rhodiums and found the Cu condenser.  Looks okay, but question...

Is it safe to use a Cu condenser for a Al/Hg reductive amination?  Would the Cu be augmented using MethylMans writeup or should the Al be augmented first then added to the reaction?
Title: probably not

Copper is not resistant to ammonia and monoethylamine so I doubt it being resistant to monomethylamine.

You mean almalgamation I guess, not augmentation?
If you dont pour your HgCl2 through the condensor this is not the problem.

Solutions:
- Use stainless steel for the inner tube of the condensor, instead of soldering the cooling jacket you may fix it with epoxide. Make it from plastic thats much easier.
- alternativly line the inner side of the coppercondensor with some chemical resistant paint.

Please try to use the right words in future - this makes it much easier to answer questions.
