Title: Hash extraction and isomerisation in acetone?
Post by: weedar on March 27, 2003, 03:13:00 PM
I've read about hash-oil extraction and isomerisation in TFSE,
but I had the idea that acetone might bee used instead of IPA,
would this work?

First put ground-up hash in a cup (we're not talking big
amounts here) and then fill it with acetone and then put a
"lid" on the cup and swirl it around several times each
day for a week. Then add a few drops of H2SO4 the last
day and let the acetone evaporate.

Would this work at all? Only reason I ask is beecause
acetone is available and "why not". :)

As I said before, acetone will extract not only the THC but also a lot of crap out of the weed.

but I still smoke all that "crap" when I smoke the hash as-is,
so it's not that bad. But will that "crap" make it difficult
to isomerize the oil?

Seems you were very right Megatherium, and I think anyway
that IPA/MeOH (thank Bob for anti-freeze ;) ) would bee a
better solution. Or solvent, as it were.

But how long shall I let the hash soak in IPA/MeOH beefore I
distill? Seems there are some contradicting opinions about it,
one says just soak for 5-6 hours and evap, while others
have said let it soak (with stirring) for days.

Also, this is 100% kitchen chem, no glassware or other
fun equipment available right now, keep that in mind when
answering ;)

You don't want to smoke acetone extracted hash, trust me,you don't.Get some dry ipa or something completely non-polar like hexane or CO2

Dichloromethane is good both for the extraction of THC's from hash (just reflux/boil and then filter of the sawdust), and for the subsequent isomerization with TsOH (or maybe H2SO4). Neutralization/Washing/Drying/Evaporation gives an oil which is very trippy and not that soporific.

Good tip Rhodium! :)

I'm still looking for a good source of H2SO4 where I live,
so the isomerisation is put on the back-burner for now.

Due to lack of equipment I doubt I'll try the DCM route now,
but I'll try when I have a better possibility to distill
off DCM from paint-stripper or whatever I can find.

AFAIK IPA/MeOH is my best choice right now, out of all the
solvents that are available at least.
