urushibara catalyst

118 g (0.89 mole) phenylacetone, 400 ml 17% ammonia in ethanol and 22 g Raney-Nickel catalyst are hydrogenated at STP to give a
85% yield of amphetamine.




I have read somewhere that the Raney-Nickel catalyst and the Urushibara catalyst are aproximately of the same activity.

Can SWIM do this preparation of Amphetamine with the Urushibara catalyst and can SWIM expect the same yield?
Urushibara is alot more OTC you see.

500 ml MeOH are saturated with NH3 ( about 5,5 Mol)than added 1 Mol Phenylacetone and hydrogenated (Raney Nickel) at 100 bar and 90°C. Yield 80%

Put 25 g Nickel and 25 g Aluminium powdered in an 5 liter flask and add 500 ml Water. Add solid NaOH slowly (ca. 80 g) After all NaOH is added and no more Reaktion is observed heat in an waterbath at 70°C for 30 minutes. The Nickel will settle down to the ground. Remove the Water above. The katalysator ist wasched with the solvent used in the reaktion.
