acetic acid smell in 2,5-dimethoxynitropropane
« on: November 24, 2003, 12:16:00 PM »
After finishing vacuum off the solvent in 2,5-dimethoxynitropropane, there is still some acetic acid that grip strongly with the nitroalkane. SWIM gonna heat this nitroalkane to 118°C to boil away all the acetic acid. Does this do any harm to the nitroalkane ?

You could wash it with a little cold water.

Well i suppose you reduced it with borohydride, and it's the acetic acid you acidified with that remains? You could simply take up the nitropropane in some DCM and wash once with water and once with brine... That should take care of the smell.

But is it that important to get rid of that last acetic acid? It shouldn't hurt anything if you just reduce the nitro right away!

edit: thought you said nitropropene and not -ane... sorry 'bout that.

You could wash it with a little cold water. It will immediately dissolve and clear out the remaining acetic acid. Otherwise a recrystallization from IPA will give you a very pure product which easily can be totally dried under a lightbulb for instance...

Heating the pure nitropropene is probably not a good idea, as the fumes are nastier than hey_man with a 15" gasoline-driven dildo in a kindergarden  8)
