The Merck (again), + ChemDraw Pro 6.0
« on: May 08, 2001, 03:44:00 PM »
ftp://198.146.80.72/_vti_pvt/_private/nul /frank/4/theHive/

For those who missed the Merck before, here it is again.  This time, the cue sheet (ISO in bin/cue format) is edited properly, the files are packed as executable RAR (so you don't have to have WinRAR to unpack them, and I've included CDRWin 4.0a (w/registration info) for those who don't have it, to burn the ISO to CD-R.

I also stuck ChemDraw Pro 6.0 up there as well; but you will need WinRAR for that one, it's not packed as an executable.

Long time no see, all :)... I've been away for a bit, so thought I'd come back & take a look at what I've been missing...

The FTP site exists, but not the catalog structure you have written down. Could you please check the accuracy of it?

Actually Rhodium, I managed to get to the specified directory on the FTP site; the said files are there. /_vti_pvt is hidden and not listed, you have to manually change to the directory. A program such as CuteFTP is unable to change into the /nul / directory, maybe because of the space after it. So you have to manually change at least to /_vti_pvt/_private/nul /frank/ and be sure to include the space after the "nul" directory name.

And ChesireHouse- Thank you a LOT!! My merk CD went bad (First CD I ever had do that) and I've been looking for this image ever since. You rule.

well, the site seems to be down already,so I'm re-uploading the files to another public server.  with my upload speed, it'll take a few hours; I'll post here again when it's done.

SpicyBrown is correct; I employ various 'hiding' and 'locking' techniques to conceal/protect the files.  you will not be able to get into any dir named 'aux ', 'nul ', 'com1 ', etc, without both including the trailing space, and knowing the next directory in the path (this is a 'locked' directory, which prevents people who 'stumble' upon the site from entering the dir unless they already know the name of the nested folder).

I'll let you all know when it's done.

i'm not sure if the lack of response to this stuff is because no one wants it, or whether it's just that no one looks past the first post to find the revised address, or what.  if no one here wants the apps, i'll post them on an fxp board somewhere (tho that will shorten the lifespan of the 'pub' considerably).  not trying to be bitchy about it, just don't want to waste time on this if no one but rhodium wants it.  on the other hand, i have more chem-related software, if ppl like it i'll upload it.

incidentally, for those using a web browser instead of an ftp client to d/l this stuff, you will need to type

ftp://

before the address (or it will assume it is an http address & you'll get a 404 error).

Damn, what did I not do right? I saved all the Merck files to the hard drive. The exe file unpacked a bin and cue file. I burned the two files to CD using the program that came with my PC, adaptec or something, but the two files on CD didn't open. None of the Merck files I downloaded were actually opened, exept the exe file. I don't seem to have a program that will open them...Thanks to cable internet I didn't have to rip all my hair out... ::) .. The Merck I have was printed before I was born! Yes, I am too cheap to spend $60 for a new one, when the library has them for free.

ok, the 2 files are not to be burned to the cd.  the bin file is an 'image' file, and the cue file tells the program how to burn it.  d/l the app i put on the ftp, cdrwin4.  install it & register it, then click on the first button on the toolbar & select 'load cue sheet or tracks'.  navigate to the cue sheet (make sure it's in the same dir as the bin file) and dbl-click. then click 'start' or 'record cd' or whatever.

p.s. adaptec ezcd creator sucks the big one.

my Chemdraw 5 Ltd so I did, then asks me for reg. info
I can't find!. :) ...Thanks to Cheshire for the Merck!
Its working perfectly, VERY cool.
I also stuck ChemDraw Pro 6.0 up there as well; but you will need WinRAR for that one, it's not packed as an executable

the reg info should be in the *.nfo file.  if you don't have an nfo viewer, you can either open it in notepad (use terminal font, 9 pt or so) or do a google search for 'DAMN nfo viewer' & download it (freeware).

Can the Merck be installed onto my hard drive, or does it have to be put onto a CD? You see, I don't have a read/write CD drive, just read-only... Am I fucked? How many Mb is the installed Merck?

I have all the Merck files, the bin and the cue, and the CDRWIN program installed. Not sure what to do next though...

Greetings, earthling. Take me to your dealer.

hmmm...well, without a cd-rw, the only things i can think of are:

1.  use 'bin2iso' or 'binchunker' to convert the bin file to an iso file, and then use 'winimage' to extract all the files to a folder, and try to install it that way (the cd image is about 320 megs i think), which might work, or

2. get 'daemon tools' and use that to mount the bin file as a 'virtual cd', then install the whole thing to hard drive (putting all the files on your hdd is an option during install), which should work, or, finally,

3. get a cd-rw drive, they're so cheap anymore you might as well (which would definitely work).

you can probably find easily all of the above programs using a google search, but if you have a problem, pm me.  all but winimage are freeware, i think.

Beware CDRWIN!!!!
« Reply #27 on: May 14, 2001, 01:56:00 PM »
Say beez, have a care with CDRWin. Have heard some truly nasty rumors on the Web about this SW. Like, that it checks for particular SN's which have been posted on warez channels. Then when it finds them, it doesn't just self-destruct, it EATS YOUR COMPUTER!! i.e. acts like one of the most destructive virii, and writes over your HD partition table, as well as some other highly toxic activity.

This can (in the worst case, if you don't have lots of experience dealing with technical malice) require a complete reformat of your hard drive, with loss of all data. Have you got all your passwords & account info backed up?  Could you stand to lose all your email files? Do you have every program you're running backed up to CD's? Look out for shit like this. It is delayed action: it does not happen when you use it, but some time later.

Obviously the author of CDRWin is a malicious mother. The recommendation I have seen, to deal with this, is NOT to try to register CDRWin. Just use it in its demo mode, preferably just once, to write the CD you want from the .bin and .cue files. Then uninstall it! Reinstall it again, if you have another CD to burn from these type files. The only price for this is, you will have to record at 1X speed. It will take you 74 minutes to burn your CD. Chemists are patient folks. What's another 50-60 minutes, compared to the risk of total catastrophe?

Half a pint's a half a pound, a half the world around, around.

i have been using this one for a while now with no problems.  the thing is, you need to use the version that is included, not download a trial and then use a serial.  this version was included with the serial, so obviously the coder never had a chance to put this serial on a cdrwin 'black list' with this version.  just do not 'check for upgrades', and don't use this serial with any version other than the one that it's packed with.

from your wording i take it you're using IE to d/l the files.  you should use a real ftp client, like flashfxp.  IE might not be able to handle the hidden dirs & locks.

Unfortunately, that server where PDR is, gives "cannot find path" on two different real FTP clients (BulletProofFTP and FlashFXP) and Netscape.

Other one with Bible works Ok.

Regarding release dates on appz... Sculpt 3 was released Aug 1999 (I mean oficial release, not from warez groups :) It's a mol modelling program, which really stands out between others, allowing easily correct molecules shape by hand and calculate changes on the fly.

Kekule - dunno about release date, but, as far as I know, it's absolutely only program product, which takes scanned structural formula images and convert them into standart chem software formats. Produced by Oxford Moleculars.

And Alchemy 2000 - I believe it was initially released in 1999. You see, industry standart in medicinal chemistry was (still kinda is) SYBYL by Tripos. Well, SYBYL is for nice grand Silicon Graphics computers. Alchemy 2000 is basically SYBYL adapted for windows (maybe slightly tuned down in process)

i just now cut the address for forensic utility suite directly from my post, above, amd pasted it into flashfxp, & it went right to the folder. (quick connect>enter ftp/url>then paste).  i also just now did the same thing with the PDR addy.  i have options>preferences|advanced 'show hidden files' selected, and options>preferences|proxy/firewall/ident 'use passive mode' checked.

can't figure out what the problem you are having is.  make sure you aren't including a trailing space at the end of the path when you cut/paste... make sure, if you are pasting the ip and path separately, that you include the / at the beginning of the path.

Commendations, CheshireHouse. You are an assiduous worker, dedicated and generous.

It was my bad, that I couldn't find the directory I was looking for earlier. I blame it on my favorite FTP client, the venerable WS_FTP95, aka WS_FTPLE. Another way took me there. I like a lot of the older versions of software, because they seem to have a more intuitive user interface. Perhaps I just get used to their idiosyncracies. I like to use software that I know what it's doing at all times, stuff that I could (at least in theory, heh-heh) duplicate the code for.

Somebody get Half-a-Pint off that high horse before another rant comes out. Ah, my all-time favorite browser was IE 3.2, not too far evolved from the open source Mosaic it was ripped from. Lightweight, nimble and fast, it would do just what you asked it to, neither more nor less. Can't effectively use it now, since M$ brainstormed the bright idea to snarl it all up in the roots of the operating system. Hmm. IE4 could not be uninstalled without ripping the guts out of the system registry. That's enough of that, though.

Paint Shop Pro peaked at its 4.14 version. The old WinZip, knowing nothing about tar.gzip, could do all I wanted it to. Cool it! OK.

See you at the red light. My '56 Ford V8 gonna eat your Lexus for breakfast.
