A few mistakes
« Reply #2 on: April 08, 2002, 09:11:00 PM »
I don't have a solid organic chemistry background, but I think I see a few mistakes :

1) I think you should have used allylbenzene, and NOT benzaldehyde.

2) What you are calling a "REDUCTION" in fact is an oxidation, you convert the isosafrole ( or analogous molecule withouth the methylenedioxy ring ) to the ketone ( in your case P2P ). Easier to do a Wacker oxidation, though.
If you use the Wacker you won't need to isomerize the safrole ( or allylbenzene ).

3) The last step is amination plus reduction. If you follow the recipe it might work. I suggest you scale it down from TSII, I use 40 g ketone.

4) Don't give it a try if you are not really sure, study and post questions, otherwise, it is dangerous, also a waste of time and reagents. Other bees who know more chemistry might help you more than me.

5) The iodine etc. is the easy way,  but reagents suspicious, difficult to get.
