glass baby , glass
« on: September 26, 2002, 04:41:00 PM »
swim has come across a distillation 'kit' , containing the following :

1 - 500ml RB Flask
1 - Vacuum Adapter
1 - Liebig, 200mm
1 - 3 Way Adapter
1 - Thermometer Adapter
1 - 1000ml RB Flask

swim would like to know if any other glass is necessary to dream .... perhaps a vigreux cloumn , more flasks (2,3 neck?) , Sep. funnel , buchner funnel(ceramic of course),and how about beakers ?

or how about sizes , can swim skate thru a synth without nothing larger than a 1L flask ?

proposed method of  synth , either bright star , MM , or those found in TSII .........
swim seeks the knowledge of those with experience ....

Yes you will need much more,as for what well you need to figure that out for yourself,if you dont even know what equiptment you need then you dont know what the hell your doin(no problem everybodys gotta start somewhere)and should probably have some paitience and read more.Your probably gonna want to chose a method after much reading and contemplation on what swiy can get his hands on,once you do this what equiptment you need should bee well know to you.Peace,Chambered.

Go get a pipette, a large sep funnel, a good assortment of beakers from 100ml to 3L, an addition funnel, a vigreaux column, and a couple of larger flasks, say two or three liter two or three necked RBFs.

All paths are the same: they lead nowhere

To add to Gj's list

Add this to gJ's list and you got a pretty good little lab.

A magnetic stirrer hot plate combo
A vacuum aspirator or better pump
A H2O pump system for the condensor and the H20 baths you build
Lab Rack either made or purchased
4 or 5 clamps
Keck Clips
Buchner Funnel
Erlenmyer flask with Vac take-off
Necessary thermometer adapters
Necessary Vac adapters
Some Lab tubing
Some Vac tubing

Stuff you NEED
« Reply #4 on: September 26, 2002, 11:34:00 PM »
You will need all that plus what chicken said plus a filter flask, a buchner, a sep funnel, and a thermometer(0-260C). You don't need an addition funnel but it's helpful or a vigereaux. You will need three lab stands and three clamps minimum. Keck clips aren't needed, nor are larger flasks than 1L unless you are going BIG.

Really you should be familiar with what you want to do enough such that you don't need to ask these kinds of questions. And this is just a minimum list, skys the limit as far as goodies like multi necked flasks etc.

well in all honesty , swim was trying to discern what glass swim could cut corners at . swim knows swim needs a TON of stuff , but for example : can swim get by without a three neck and just use a two neck flask ..... and can swim just scale reactions DOWN so swim can just use the same'ole 1L flask instead of risking more exposure by ordering a 2L flask ........

swim isn't asking for any DISCRETE examples , rather a general viewpoint ... swim has been studying up for quite a few months now , and swim knows what's going on , swim knows the Rxns , swim knows swim can do this ,swim is just seeking the voice of those who have actually done it , you know how the saying goes (like shulgin said in pihkal) : the proof of the pudding is in the eating ......... so , to those that have "eaten" please inform ! all input welcome .... if you tell swim to UTFSE then all swim can say is SMFD .... haha

later bees !

all you need is a trashcan, an oar, and some coffee filters. ;D

Just add KMnO4
« Reply #9 on: September 27, 2002, 05:45:00 AM »
Seems like the only synth around here you can do like that is MethCat via KMnO4, or maybe a jones oxidation in a trash can stirred with an oar -- that might just work. . .   ;)

You don't need multi-necked flasks at all for what you're trying to do but they are convienient.  A 2L flask is no more "suspicious" than a 1L flask.  There are many vendors you can find on the net that genuinely don't give a fuck about what you order or are trying to do.

they hired a chemist to make MDMA at their university, and that was all he said he needed for his lab.

In certain cases, you can get add a third neck to your two necked flask by attaching a clasien adapter to one of the necks. MaDMAx wrote a great post about making expensive apparatus from conglomerations of less expensive apparatus; I highly suggest checking that post out.

The above post is purely fictional. Any resemblance to "real-life" is purely coincidental.

Forget the Glassware
« Reply #16 on: October 03, 2002, 03:12:00 AM »
Piss on the glassware, the hardest part of your venture will be chem acquisition.  For any newbie that is starting from scratch, I would suggest thinking long and hard about what is going on, what will be going on, and what could go on.  Aquire the chems first....  FIRST.... without the chems, all your pretty glassware is shit.  By the time you aquire all the chems, you will already know what size and how many of what you will need...

And unless you live in BFE, aquiring glassware is not a problem....  yet....

And remeber who would you want for your best friend?A glassblower of course. They fix glass thingys for few bucks.Like swim had a three necked flask with one neck missing. He took about 5 bucks(ground glass joint included) for installing a new one.And once he repaired my broken stillhead for free.New one would have cost about 25 bucks.
