swim ended up finding one in near new condition at his university at the chem departments free glassware table.  Guess swim won't have to pay his buddy.  But thanxs for the info, always nice to see what one saved by just looking around.
Title: good for reflux?

would there be a problem in using this condensor to do a reflux?

Davies condensers are excellent for reflux.

I always liked the coiled reflux condensors. Work perfectly, only disadvantage is that you better don't work with reactions that have a tendency to spew their contents out (Al/Hg being a fine example). Coiled reflux condensors are a bitch to clean up after such accidents.

Yellium, perhaps you should use this:

Also useful in hard bumping distillations
(SJ = Standard Joint  :-[ )

If there is something I overlook please tell, I don´t have to make all bad experiences by myself to learn  :)

thanks for the replies, swim can't wait to go back and see what other goodies he can  aquire free of charge.  Can't believe they give this stuff away. 1st pic goes to the chem students (but anyone can somewhat help themselves) then they send the rest of teh left overs out to other colleges, i guess its a great perk for going to a well funded research university.

i'd suggest bees here should try looking around there local collages and u's for similar situations
