Title: RXN vesel cracks
Post by: BigKev on September 21, 2003, 11:00:00 AM
ive UTFSE and have read a bit and with no doubt a proper flask is the go (SWIM will get one soon). recently in SWIMS nightmare SWIM cooked a 5g nano. 2hrs into it the RXN vesel cracked at the bottom (was a champange bottle (yes SWIM is stupid) & a push pull setup). SWIM shit himself and a tiny ammount of HI filled the room. SWIM turned the heat off and took the RXN outside and it died.

wat do other bees recommend (tried and true) for nano reactions?

pyrex baby bottles?
salt shakers ? (doubt these can even do 3g reaction)
or one of them "spot light" bulbs (with flat base) - thing is with this how to get rid of that silver lining crap inside which could afect the rxn?

i take it HI gas would corrode metal etc

any ideas welcome!  ::)

Proper flasks are the only way to go for reactions which are heated or are themselves exothermic, anything else is just to ask for accidents.

Title: I think the problem with light bulbs is that...

I think the problem with light bulbs is that they are so thin, how does one push a stopper in that safely?
Can the neck thickness bee improved when melting in the neck with a propane torch?

The other day I saw first hand that clarity doesn't necessarily equal good glass. quite rapid changes in temperature caused a coffee jar to crack. Really surprised me, but I'm glad it happened ithen[/i] of course...

I filled it with hot tap water, then cold tap water many times over. Then I noticed a big crack near the base.

I was cleaning garden soil incidently to get some sand. (I have synethic SiO2 but the fine mesh is like flour)

I'd really like a couple of volumetric flasks.  >:(
