Abstract

The essential oil obtained from the leaves of Piper affinis hispidinervum C. DC was analysed by GC- MS. Sixteen substances were identified, corresponding to 98.9% of the oil. The major component (74.3%) was sarisan (1-allyl-2-methoxy-4,5-methylenedioxybenzene), identified by NMR spectroscopy. Safrole (18.4%) was also found in the oil.

Sarisan (an MMDA-2 precursor, mentioned as "asaricin" in Pihkal) is a relatively rare substance.

Rhode, what's the point that you're trying to emphasize from this article? The fact that long pepper can contain up to 18% safrole, or, that sarisan is similar to safrole? (at least it looks similar to safrole, but I'm no chemist :-P)

Sarisan (6-methoxy-safrole), a MMDA-2 precursor

I wanted to tell people about yet another safrole source, but mainly I wanted to inform about the existance of the relatively rare phenylpropanoid sarisan (6-methoxy-safrole), which is a precursor to MMDA-2, one of the "essential amphetamines", as Shulgin calls them (as they are derived from essential oil components). However, Shulgin uses the alternative name "asaricin" in Pihkal instead of sarisan.

Edit: The propenylbenzene corresponding to sarisan/asaricin is carpacin, which is discussed further in

Sarisan is also found in several other oils:
