Why wont this work? (MeNO2) :))
« on: December 02, 2001, 10:22:00 PM »
Sorry for dumb question but couldnt help asking it :-[

CH3OH + HNO3 + H2SO4 ->MeNO2

Bubbling gaseous CH4 :

CH4 + HNO3 + H2SO4 ->MeNO2

Yes,these look too simple to work :)
But hell,i`m just curious why these procedures wont work??? :) No i`m serious:) Hellish temp and pressure? :P

CH3OH + HNO3 => CH3-O-NO2

Nitric acid forms an ester with methanol (methyl nitrate), which is a high explosive, similar to nitroglycerin. It will not make nitromethane.

The second reaction is only useful in industrial settings, due to temperatures and pressures used.

I'll have to translate it so I can read it.  HTML is off.

CH3OH + HNO3 + H2SO4->MeNO2

Bubbling gaseous CH4 :

CH4 + HNO3 + H2SO4->MeNO2

Methane is highly inert in the second process.  Maybe it would work at high temperature with a catalyst, but I've never seen anything like it.

Ok thanks.

One more (last one:) question - will this be possible then?
CH2I2 or CH2Br2 and NaNO2, well with presence of smth that could give H2? ::)

Yeah i know looks stupid...:)

Ehh, still trying to make nitromethane? I don't think anyone else bothers because it is so easy to buy. Now if it were nitroethane you wanted that would be different and there are threads here on making nitroethane using sodium nitrite and either ethyl halide or ethyl sulfate.

Heh,yeah i know...but in my part of the world buying nitro is not easy.it`s not used anywhere...i`m not us resident actually

So, (just taking a guess as to why you want nitromethane) perhaps you should try making methylamine from ammonium chloride and formaldehyde.

Gawd no, he wants nitromethane specifically.... i know him ;)
i think it was you who once asked me the same question, no?
