Patent DE368160
production of sulfur monochloride S2Cl2It is possible to produce S
2Cl
2 of high purity and correct bp continually in one step. To achieve this Cl
2 is introduced into a vessel of molten sulfur, that is connected to a cooler and receiving flask. The whole process, introduction of chlorine and distillation of S
2Cl
2, happens under vacuum. To speed up the reaction I
2, Fe or a metal salt, e.g. FeCl
3 is added. The molten sulfur is kept at constant height in the vessel by addition of new sulfur. Vacuum and amount of chlorine gas are regulated so that light yellow S
2Cl
2, which is practically free of sulfur and lower boiling chlorination products, permanently distills over. Yield is nearly quantitative.
