Title: al/hg pic ??

Simple - in this al/hg, could someone explain why the guy has a claisen adaptor there? if he's just holding it in reflux then the condensor should suffice. Is there a baloon attached to that adaptor to hold in any gas if it runs away? or??

Swim was contemplating using an heatproof glass/plastic container with a lid and attaching a reflux condensor made from two different sized fluroescent tube sections glued together, so is wondering wtf the claisen adaptor is for and if so can it be omitted or one has to rig up a new condensor.

He uses the claisen adapter to be able to attach his addition funnel at the top of the column without creating an air-tight reaction setup - which could otherwise lead to pressure build-up and explosions.

Ah, nifty. I think one will do without, and just not create a total seal at the top of the reflux column.
The reflux column is almost ready physically, but needs packing, since the end of the tubes are flush, packing would fall out. Can you suggest a permeable material that one could use to hold packing in there that won't affect an al/hg rxn?

One could possibly dream of putting aluminum mesh like kitchen seive wire over the end...?

If you are doing a synth using Nitromethane as the amine source then you could always use an eye dropper and slowly add the Nitro and P2P down the condenser.

Why are you putting packing in a reflux condenser? This will be counter productive.

I recommend you read this thread.

The amine source could be methylamine, and the initial chemical could be l-pac, and then the associated ephedrine produced. Will this require any special conditions? SWIM doesn't think so.

No packing will be used, either.
