OFF! brand insect repellant contains roughly 23.80% N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide which can be fractionally distilled and hydrolyzed with 6 N NaOH by refluxing for 6 to 12 hours to yield 3-methylbenzoic acid and some diethylamine, whose conventional abbreviation is NH(Et)2, not DEA, by the way.
Acid hydrolysis (6 normal as well) would also work.
Hippies have good excuses to buy large amounts of insect repellant anyway I would suppose, at least in the south.
