Methyl Man's Benzoquinone Wacker Oxidation
« on: June 06, 2004, 11:31:00 PM »
Swim was reading the "Benzoquinone Wacker Oxidation of Safrole in Methanol"
by Methyl Man on rhodiums site. Great read, but swim has some questions about
solvent substitutions...

Methylman uses MeOH and that is an alcohol difficult to find in swims area.
Can one use IPA or EtOH instead?

And also he is using DCM to extract. Can toulene be used?

Thanks! :)

Well Jammin,I find it impossible to believe that MeOH is difficult to get in your area.

As for toluene, check to see if it is non polar, and check to see if ketone and it are soluble.

P recommends you take a course...

jammin: look into gas-line drying solvents.

DCM is non-polar just like tol, but people prefer it for this situation.

For the answer on toulene, i know i needed an np, but i couldnt find you if the ketone was solluble or not...

As for the methanol thing, cant someone just answer the question instead of suggesting that i can get methanol easliy.
I cant, but there is an abdundance of IPA and EtOH
here.

Many people stupid has died here from drinking MeOH, thats why its not used much here.

I know i can distill RCfuel, but 0.5 ltr of this fuel costs very much compared to 10ltrs of IPA that i can get for like $20.

And i have to distill of the nitrometan... explosive... :P

Try going to a hobby shop and make them order some pure
nitromethane and methanol for you, so you can mix your own
fuel. Trust me, even in your country this is possible.
