Layers with MM Wacker
« on: May 19, 2003, 03:21:00 AM »
Interesting, a friend was discussing a problem he had with the MM wacker.  He has done this before, but couldn't remember that he ran into this problem.  He was up to washing with sodium bicarbonate.  Added the 500mls, shaked and waited for it to fallout of solution.  Then, 3 layers appeared.

Top- really oilly
Middle- really sponge
Bottom- black shit.

I assume that the top and middle are the ones to get rid of.  But I did not remember that 3 layers formed as such.  If someone could reassue SWIM's fears, mucho appreciation.

Diagnosis: You have an emulsion

The middle layer is what is called an emulsion, which is a heterogenous mixture of both layers. To learn how to break the emulsion, UTFSE for "break AND emulsion" or "celite AND emulsion".
