Anilines are treated with CuBr₂ and tert-butylnitrite in the presence of acrylic acid, forming alpha-carboxy-phenethylbromide. Amination of the halide followed by decarboxylation gives phenethylamine (alternatively decarboxylation followed by amination of course).
