Title: Variac-operated thermowell
Post by: Jubrail on November 09, 2003, 10:48:00 PM
If I wante to use a thermowell heating mantle that is meant to be used in a variac that goes up to 100V, would I be able to use it in a regular, American outlet that is 120V?  Or is this, as it sounds, a poor idea?  If so, does anyone good with electronics know what I would need to hook up to use a mantle like that?

I don't know what a thermowell heating mantle is.

To use a heating mantle you will want some sort of power regulating device so that you can control the temperature of the heating mantle/flask. If you don't have a Variac you can also use a dimmer switch that is made to control the brightness of household lighting. I believe that this has been discussed before. You might want to search on the term dimmer switch.

And sorry that I didn't come up with that search on my own.  A thermowell is just another type of mantle for smaller (500 ml and below) rb flasks.
