NaOH remaining after diluting Methylamine to 40%?
« on: August 08, 2003, 10:24:00 PM »
Writeup: To prepare a solution of 40% solution of methylamine in water, 100g methylamine hcl is placed in a flask with 50mL water.  Then a solution of 60g NaOH in 100ml water is added with stirring.

Swim's question is this: Do you remove the NaOH after it's been added?  The literature doesn't specify this so swim is posting this question on here.  Thank you.

Thats table salt, not NaOH anymore. And it does no harm in the al/hg rxn.

[edit] You must have both solutions ice cold when doing this or you will loose alot of your methylamine when the two react.
