GBL Purification Question
« on: January 14, 2004, 12:38:00 PM »
SWIM has a product which consists primarily of GBL.  The ingredients are:

Butyrolactone, Hydroxypropylcellulose, Aloe, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Calcium Pantothenate, Denatonium Benzoate, Fragrance, D&C Red No. 33

SWIM wanted to purify this substance and make a GHB salt (NaGHB).  His idea after finding as much info. about the ingredients as possible, was to vacuum distill the substance and collect the distillate - hopefully leaving behind any impurities in the GBL, the coloring, and the hydroxypropylcellulose, etc.

Then use the distillate with NaOH in titration to make NaGHB.  Then vac distill this off to dryness and distilland would hopefully be pure(r) GHB.

Does anyone have a better method or comments?  The most offensive ingredient SWIM is worried about getting rid of is the Bitrex (Denatonium Benzoate).  SWIM knows little about what "fragrance" is.
