Preparing Ether.

EQUIPMENT distillation flask water cooled condenser
tap funnel thermometer
filtration paper rubber tubing
ring stand clamp
burner asbestos-covered wire gauze
ice-bath litmus paper

MATERIALS Ethyl alcohol
concentrated H2SO4
******

WARNING
1. During the condensation process, do not forget to cool vapor.
2. Ether is volatile liquid. Close the mouth of filtration flask with the rubber tubing. Place the
filtration flask into the ice bath.
3. Do not smell ethers.

PROCEDURE
1. Set up the apparatus
2. Place 50ml of ethyl alcohol into the
distillation flask.
3. Add 20ml of conc. sulfuric acid into
the same distillation flask.
4. Put 25ml of ethyl alcohol into the tap
funnel.
5. Heat the distillation flask on
asbestos-covered wire gauze.
6. Add ethyl alcohol from the tap funnel at the same rate at which ether distils.
7. Boil 5 more minutes after ethyl alcohol has finished in the tap funnel.
8. Stop boiling.

KMnO4 used for?
That sounds like an explosion waiting to happen heating ether with KMnO4?
Although I see it on your materials list, I do not see it in the procedure.

You know what?

That's a good question.

CH3CH2OHOH+HOHOCH2CH3 --H2SO4--> CH3CH2OCH2CH3+H2O

Nope, No KMnO4 Here! ;D Thought Swim better put the balanced equation on there. Just in case Swidrippingwithcum needs it.

Probably should try this one, looks more OTC anyway.

"...Equal parts of thrice rectified spirit of wine (ethanol) and oil of vitriol are allowed to remain in contact for two months, and then the mixture is distilled from a water or sand bath. The distillate consists of two layers of liquid, of which the upper one is oleum vitrioli dulce verum."

Washing PS starting fluid with hot dH2O and letting the 2 layers sep works fine unless we are talking about 2 diff things if we are sorry for the bad information

Washing PS starting fluid with hot dH2O ......

Ether has a little solubility in water because of the two lone pairs on the oxygen bridge, somewhat like 6gr in 100 ml water, if I remember well (don't take this number for granted, check yourself, but it has a little solubility in water, of this I'm sure).
Anyway a chem supplier should sell freely ether, last month I bought a 100 ml bottle even in a simple pharmacy....It shouldn't be a problem, unless you ask for 10 liters.
